Here at Modern Attics we are always looking to share information with you in order to help you make the right decision when it comes to your attic conversion. So today’s blog is all about the top tips you may want if you’re currently considering having a loft conversion done.
So without further ado – here’s our top ten tips!
- Although it’s tempting to go for the cheapest, be a little choosy when you are looking for an attic conversion professional. This will help you meet all the potential regulations that are relevant to loft conversions such as planning permission or general building regulations.
- Make sure you get a survey done by a professional structural engineer. A good survey of your loft space will make sure that your plans can be done safely and above all in a way that will get you the result you want.
- Do get professional advice on the design of your loft. While it’s nice to have ideas yourself, there are structural and practical ways to undertake loft conversions that can keep costs down, while creating a space that you will be able to use for years to come.
- When finding a loft conversion company always look at previous work and if necessary ask for previous client testimonials. A good company will always be happy for you to see the results of their work.
- Make sure you check whether you will need a ‘party wall agreement’ for your loft conversion. This is often overlooked so get in early and make your loft conversion a smooth and happy experience.
- If you’re having a loft conversion done and you haven’t got insulation or perhaps you have very old insulation, it could be a good time to get it done. Come winter, you will reap the benefits of having a loft but also a warm living space throughout the house.
- Consider what kind of windows you might want. Velux windows can be a great option if you want to get some natural light coming in to your loft conversion and of course some well chosen lighting will also enhance the final result.
- You might need to think about your current plumbing situation if you are planning on a loft conversion.   This is because if you want heating / water you might need to change your boiler or you may even need to have pipes moved to accommodate your ideas. It’s nothing to worry about, but best get a professional’s advice on this!
- Consider the costs and your budget. While it’s nice to have exactly everything we want, it’s not always within budget. Remember, a good budget will get you a good conversion but there are limits – especially if you have to change your boiler etc.
- Prepare your house in advance of your loft conversion. You may need to move items from the loft in advance or you might even want to pack away a few things to ensure easy access for your loft conversion specialist. You may want to consider some storage short-term, but best be as prepared as you can be!
For all loft conversions it is essential to consider the implications and of course you should consider the impact it will have on your daily life, so try to be realistic and you will find your loft conversion becomes a smooth and very pleasant experience that will add real value to your home!
