Barnet is a popular area to live, so many people with homes here are reluctant to consider moving. Because the borough of Barnet is in north west London, near the border with Hertfordshire, some areas have a leafy, rural character compared to most of the capital. As its name suggests, this area lies above most of London, with Barnet Hill being a major hill. Also known as Chipping Barnet, it was once a separate town and still has its own High Street, with a good range of shops and restaurants, including The Spires shopping centre. High Barnet is well-connected for commuters, with the journey by Tube into the city centre taking around 30 to 40 minutes travelling from High Barnet station on the Northern Line. Properties in this area are varied, including larger detached period homes as well as semis, terraces, bungalows and flats.
Just a short distance from High Barnet’s town centre, Hadley Wood lies on the border with Enfield, with a Conservation area centred on Hadley Common. This is one of the most upmarket neighbourhoods of Barnet, with large period properties, some of which are in demand from top footballers. Nearby are Monken Hadley, a popular residential area which has retained much of its Hertfordshire village atmosphere, and Hadley Highstone, another ancient village. Hadley Wood has its own railway station, with trains to Kings Cross taking approximately 20 minutes at peak times.
Around a mile to the east of High Barnet, New Barnet is a popular residential suburb which is especially well connected for commuters. Trains from New Barnet railway station usually take under half an hour to reach Kings Cross. Homes in this area include flats, semi-detached and terraced houses, as well as some bungalows.
Another sought after residential area is Oakleigh Park, which has its own railway station on the Great Northern Line, making it popular with commuters. There are many large semi-detached homes in this area, as well as some detached properties. Nearby are the villages of Whetstone, which also has a good mix of property types, and Totteridge, a very upmarket area with many individual properties on larger plots. Totteridge and Whetstone underground station is on the Northern Line.
Other neighbourhoods in this area include Arkley, Cockfosters, which is partly in Enfield, East Barnet and Friern Barnet.
